A little over a week ago our family hiked to the Len Foote Hike Inn. It was our first time to visit the Hike Inn and our children's' first time to hike 10 miles - five miles in, five miles out. Over all, it was a very unique experience, one we thoroughly enjoyed and plan to repeat sometime next year, except next time we plan to stay multiple days. And, as we usually do, we had the video camera rolling if anyone wants to see and/or learn a little about the trail leading to and from, as well as the Hike Inn itself.
Besides enjoying hiking with the entire family, I was fascinated with the science lesson we received from one of the local volunteers working at the Inn on that night. He was a former AT thru-hiker (1972) and was also involved in the planning and building of the Hike Inn. He gave us the grand tour of the facilities, the history, and science behind the operation. Very interesting - one of the best applied environmental science lessons I'd heard. We also played environmental science jeopardy with a group of environmental science high school students from a private school in Augusta, GA. The game had been prepared in advance by one of the Hike Inn workers.
The trail in/out was very moderate and well maintained. Most importantly ... the food was good, the bed was warm, and the pillow was soft at the Inn.
If you go, don't miss the sunrise.
