Setup: Ok over the christmas break i went backpacking into bankhead and stayed for four days i took with me my best friend Yoho, my bedroll, a mummybag, a change of clothes, a couple of pairs of socks and boxers, my moms back pack, two boxes of granola bars(taken out of their boxes) a stick of salamii, two packs of hot dogs, a pack of marshmellows, two packets of soup, a 1 lb bag of beef jerky, a kettle, matches, a lighter, my knife, my hatchet, my machette, my map, a compass, and twelve 20 oz bottles of water....ouch i havent discovered filtered bottles yet as my brother in law is too quick to point out, oh and a wind breaker.my buddy had the same amount of food minus the machette but add a two person tent, but the tri-athalon has a liiiittle more endurance than me so he was ok with it.
the plan was to hike to fall creek falls from borden creck trail hear its about an hours walk if you move it. approx 2.5-3 miles ill figure out the exact mileage later. We were gonna hike in set up a base camp at the top of fall creek falls and just explore and hike around the are for the next few days. We woulda hiked more and camped in other spots but we had a hitch in our plans. One of my friends and one of yohos friends wanted to come out there on different days we now had a hitch in our plan we had to keep backtracking and meeting them and leading them to our campsite the good thing is they brought more food and water AND we made them carry it in their duffle bags and school backpacks in all the wrong ways. The night we got there we set up camp it was raining lightly in the dark made a fire and bedded down for the night
The first day we decided we were gonna hike north on trail 209 and try to bushwack or way into the are with the big tree. We failed miserable got lost almost walked off a cliff and then scaled down said cliff and linked back up with our trail That evening we had to get Landon(yohos friend) at warrior trading post at 7:00p.m. Naturally it was dark as hell, good thing we had headlamps. Yoho and i discovered the cool aspect of night hiking. Then i discovered a 12 foot raveen and my hip found the log on the bottom after a seven foot sraight fall but it was slippery in my defence and i didnt break anything after that nothing exciting happened although it was priceless to see landons face when we told him that he had an hour long walk ahead of him when we got back to camp we made a fire all three of us cuz it rained More and it took help to get it going we had some hot dogs and marshmellows we all bedded up in yohos two person tent and were actually quite warm and snug from the extra body heat and less room
Next day surprise surprise my hip hurt so to keep the stress off it instead of strenuous walking we went rockclimbing yoho and i crossed the river on a log but found out landon was afraid of heigths so yoho took off his shoes and carried landon across good friend right? we found a good face and yoho scurried up it was only about 5 feet or so i got halfway and said screw it we found another one and i got to the third ledge but stopped im working on slowly conquering my fear of heigths and i didnt want to push it that day then landon had to go home we got landon back to his car and he "found" the same ravine i found HAHAHAHAHA only his face found the ground instead of my hip. we got him to his car then went to get grissim. grissim wasnt at warrior trading post so i called him. "It's supposed to rain you know" he said "Its BEEN raining get your ass OUT here!!!" was my reply after much negotiations and threats about grissims manliness he came out. Yoho and i in the meantime enjoyed a pair of 32 oz mountains ice flavored gatorade, and the toilet we wanted a cheese burger but vowed to finish it off we got back to our campsite and had an easier time starting the fire we had covered it with a poncho and ate our dinner we were down to two bottles of water each that night the bottom opened up the rain poured the thunder rumbled and the wind howled, and yohos tent was...WATERPROOF!!!!!!!!!!! the next morning we woke up and packed up we hikied out and ate our burger, the boiled peanuts, and the 32oz gatoraides when we got back to the station
This was my first real attempt at backpacking, some things ive vowed to correct is 1st lighten the load, 12 20oz bottles of water SUX 2nd if my firends cant come...!^#$@ 'em its my vacation who ever can make it come who ever cant plan ahead better next time(yoho and i had planned this for a month) 3rd i need better tread on my hiking boots im tired of sliding down raveens!!!!!!!!!!! past that im sure ill find faults on my next trip till then

Dude,
I know I left a book at your house about gear and planning etc... Read it before your next excursion
In the meantime water filters are easier to come by than you'd think.
Rock on with your salami though, nice!

Kudos to you Lester! Dude, I think I would make it a priority to research water filters and water sources for your next excursion. Keep on Hiking and learn like the rest of us do. Many of us can give advice, but ultimately it comes down to what works best for you. I 'm not sure I've seen anyone else carry an arsenal of cutting implements as vast as yours! Sounds like you had a great time though, and that's what counts. Keep on keepin' on. Happy Trails Rob

Keep at it. Everyone's first excursion is full of dumb happenings, bad gear, miserable nights, and heavy loads. The next one will be better.
#1, find a water filter. Might I recommend the Katadyn Hiker Pro or the Aqua Mira water tablets. Those both would lighten the water bottle loads!
When's the next trip?

I must be teaching my scouts to well. It's been a long time sense one of thoughs camp outs. Let use know and I will join you for one.
Only as a completely neutral observer there to document the events and not to
interfear
with the outcome. I think it could be fun.
On a serious note some of use have lots of equipment and if we go you could use some. I have stoves, bags, packs, tents, pads, and a MIOX purifier.
I have been doing this backpacking thing for over 20 years. I thing there are other old timers around hear also as I have seen some really good advice posted. One thing is forsure We will not always agree on everything, but that doesn't mean anyone is wrong. You should try out some of everyone ideas and see what works for you, or the hard way is a very very good teacher. Your back and legs will thank you later.
By the way the tablets are a very cheap start for purification. I used them for years.
