Kinlock Shelter defaced

I'm surprised it took this long, but....
Kinlock Shelter defaced
This is the backside of the large boulder with all the petroglyphs on it. Also, toward the back of the shelter someone carving up the sandstone trying to mimic the glyphs found on the boulder.
The glyphs are really starting to degrade now. I almost couldn't find the sun glyph at all this time, quite a change from when I was there last spring. A lot of dust/dirt was on the boulder too, kind of weird. Didn't really see any evidence of digging, though.

Actually Sam, it has been defaced a long time. Several of the carvings on the top of the boulder are "new." This is just the latest and it won't be the last unfortunately.

I'd never noticed the boulder scratched in to this degree. Which of the carvings on top are new? There seems to be an upswing in activity, although it's been 3 or 4 months since I've visited I guess. The fire rings that in the shelter someone's destroyed too [wasn't me], and there were also big chunks of sandstone that'd be smashed out toward the back for kicks. Also, what was the point of cutting the trees along the shoulder of that old road? I know they're removing the bridge, but it's not like they could have driven equipment over the stubs left behind. Too bad, I guess. I wish there were some way of monitoring the shelter. Didn't someone post a good long while back of cameras installed at some of the shelters that were being dug? Maybe something similar could be done here.

I know technology is great - but its why i have not embraced gps and posting of coordinates of many places that should be found by trail and error and perserverance with reverance!

The first time my dad carried me to the shelter was in 1958, I was 5 years old. In the back of the shelter there was what I can only describe as a sunburst carved into the sandstone on a small ledge. The next time I visited was in 1971 and someone had knocked off about half of it. When I carried my boy scout troop out there in 1989, it was all gone.
Here's a little more details from a thread of last year:

We went over there last August and though we couldn't find the sunburst (probably because we didn't know where to look), everything looked to be in fairly good shape. The graffiti on the back of the rock wasn't there either, fortunately, nor the rest of what was mentioned. It's very aggravating to see such careless acts and utter disregard for both nature and our native history...

the sunburst on the main rock is still there, just very very hard to see now. I'll upload a photo of it later.

Wow, thanks Sam. I'm not sure how I missed that...as it seems to be in pretty fair condition, all things considered...I take your meaning of "main rock" to mean the one where most of the other petroglyphs are?

Yep, where most of the glyphs are. It was covered in silt/dust/dirt, the whole thing was. I dusted it off some with my glove and then still spent about 10 minutes searching for it. just shows up well in the photo.
This is from last March...seems less pronounced now than then....or maybe it's the glare:
