I've been looking and these are my top three. A demo giant revel o $550, specialized hardrock disc sport new $600, and diamondback response xe new $329. They are all in the parts and price range I'm looking at. My plan is to ride it for a year and if I still like the sport to upgrade to a fs. I just don't want to drop $1000 and not like the sport. Thanks for the help.

How can I have 64 views and not one of them can help in the least? has this site became one of those sites? I know when I first joined here I'd get a ton of hits within the first day. That's the reason I came here with this.

Hey Dwhitt,

We might look at the post, but I'm guessing most of us are hikers, not bikers.  I've got a basic hardtail mtn bike that I'd like to sell myself if anybody is interested.  I bought it from someone around Pensacola on e-bay for their minimum price but it's too small for me.  I've just been to lazy to ask around. I got it for $200 plus $50 for him to deliver it.

I would recommend the Specialized.  I think Giant has a good reputation too, but I'm not familiar with their mountain bikes.   Almost all of my friends ride Specialized and the Hard Rock and Rockhopper are great first bikes.

I think the Diamond Back is not really a good mountain bike brand.   If you can buy it at a Target or Walmart, or even Dick's/Academy, pass on it.  Get a bike from a bike shop.   Here in Birmingham, the Bike Link shops sell Specialized mainly, and the Cahaba Cycles I think specialized in Trek.   I always recommend shopping one of those shops, although I think there are a couple other good ones, and I always recommend Trek or Specialized.

If you get a heavy bike or one that can't take a beating, you'll never like the sport.   And if you get the Specialized you won't feel the need to upgrade in a year.  You can ride that thing for the next 4 years.

I would say go with specialized.   Its pretty nice, and I do like their bikes.  And better resale if you want to step up later on down the road.

To be self serving I'm selling my old Ibex Iginition http://mobile.craigslist.org/bik/2192478262.html  (I might be breaking a forum rule here, let me know I couldn't find the rules)

I'm in Mobile, but I'm meet ya at a local trail here and you can ride it on some dirt, if you are in the area, and if you like it you can get it.
