About a year ago I was hiking along Mattox Creek on the northern boundary of the wilderness area and came upon a spring flowing from a rock wall along the southern bank of the creek. It had an official looking sign over it with the words "Hoss Hood Spring". The sign looked old and was metal with a brown background and white lettering, similar to the signs used to mark distances to trailheads, etc. I am just curious if anyone knows anything about this spring or exactly who Hoss Hood was? I live in the area and have asked a lot of local folks about it and have yet to find anyone who knows about the spring or who Hoss Hood might have been. It seemed odd to have a spring with such an official-seeming sign over it out in the middle of nowhere.

I just came across this forum today and have enjoyed reading the posts.

I've seen the name, either in one of the Bankhead Monitor magazines or one of the Butch Walker books.  I have no clue where, but I'll see if I can find it again.

Chris,
I was very interested in the title you gave this thread.  My momma was a Hood.  Her great, great granddad was John Wilson Henry Hood, the first postmaster at Kinlock and buried in the Johnson Cemetery on trail 202.  His brother was Hoss Hood.  Hoss Hood settled along Mattox Creek in the late 1700's or early 1800's near the spring you found according to family history. There was also a grist mill nearby but it was not his or any of the family's as far as we can tell.  All the older generation my late mom's age are now too old to remember exactly where the spring is located and I have tried to find it but there is so much to explore in the Mattox creek area I always got sidetracked and have yet to see the spring.  All I knew was it came out of a bluff which is not enough for me to narrow it down to a particular location.

I would really appreciate more specific directions, if you don't mind sharing them.

I'll be in the area in a few weeks, and can take pictures or whatever you want.  Just let me know.

Did anybody ever find out anything more on this spring? I'm always curious about these really well made signs that show up in remote places. Supposedly, there is a really nice one out in the Yellowstone backcountry proclaiming some waterfall's name is some dude's name, plus falls. I think it was something like "Jim's Falls" or something. The guys who found it asked around and there was no record of the sign, and the signmaker said his shop definately didn't make it. Weird.

Anyway, I suspect somebody probably put up the sign on their own volition, based on CEL's description of the area. You actually run into them more often than you'd suspect. Apparently, it isn't very hard to get a small sign made.

As for Uncle Wayne's comment... Totally cool to have a family connection on that. Even cooler that you know the history, UW!

I hiked back into the area this past weekend and took a photo this time. I am going to try to link the photograph to this post. I'm not sure if I am doing it right though, so hopefully it will show up.

Yup, that worked. It looks like a homemade sign to me, but I cannot be 100% sure because I've never seen a NFS sign quite that old. Thanks for sharing!

Hiked by the Hoss Hood Spring today, the tree the sign is attached to is broken, the sign is still there just upside down.

We need to fix that. It may be a landmark of some kind when the history is revealed.
