Albert Mountain Firetower on the AT

« on: February 20, 2011, 10:20:22 PM »

I was told this weekend that the long time caretaker of Springer Mountain, "Many Sleeps," will no longer be taking care of the mountain and greeting hikers at Springer. From what they said, no one really knows why he decided to leave his post.

Wouldn't it be nice if he were returning home to write a book about all the characters he met on Springer Mountain through the years.

I find that strange but who knows. That would be a good book.  Maybe that's what he is doing.

"It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it while you can, while it is still there. So go out there and hunt and fish and mess around.  Ramble out yonder, explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air. Sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious and awesome space.  I promise you this one sweet victory, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by calculators. : you will outlive the bastards."
