What brand of rain gear (jacket/pants), if any, do you use or recommend?

Marmot Precip - Waterproof, breathable, light. Makes a good outer shell when I need a little extra warmth.

I have two that i bought at the America's Thrift Store in Pell City. The lighter one is a white White Sierra Shell and the other is an orange and black Lowe Alpine jacket. Both are waterproof, but the Lowe Alpine is a little heavy for warmer weather. Together, they cost me around $20...

If the weather is very warm to hot I don't really carry any because I'd rather be wet with water than sweat, and here in the south even the most breathable ones will still cause you to sweat heavily. But when the weather is cool, Marmot Precip is the best one I've ever seen for the money.

I use a Mountain Hardware rain shell that is a couple of years old. It works good when it raining but I admit it can get a little hot. It has breathable zippers down the sides which helps. I use it in combination with a fleece in winter, if the fleece is not warm enough. Aside from weight you may want to consider how well it packs down.
I have heard the Marmot mentioned above is really good.

And-- never pay full price for it. Someone always seems to have it on sale. Sometimes you get a sweet deal like Dogwood found at your local thrift store.

I guess I should also say I just use a cheap pack cover for my pack. I don't know the brand, but it was about 20$ at Dick's Sporting Goods. I will have to get something better eventually as the back still gets pretty wet and I feel it should pack down better.
For my sleeping bag, since I have a down bag, I used to always wrap it in a garbage bag. Since I have bought a sleeping back sized Sea-to-Summit bag just for it.
I have considered getting some sort of trail gaiter for my boots.

This sounds like a versatile piece of gear, but kind of expensive.
