Just wondering, do you have any favorite or special campsites on the Pinhoti?

Not exactly the answer I had in mind, but an answer none the less! (thanks for making me laugh!)

Get a hammock and you'll find a lot of new special campsites.

What about that one halfway up the hill by the parking lot? Classic Alabamistan.

The one above Clairmont Gap TH is pretty nice. Not a big area, small slope, no water, but a beautiful 270 deg view all around. More good ones are: Caney Head(big area, nice usually reliable spring; shelter above Cheaha falls(beautiful view and hearing creek running); and Lower Shoal Shelter(2 creeks running into one), among many others.

thanks dogwood, Ill have to check out the one at clairmont gap, ----sounds nice! (is there room to park more than one car there? Also, is it a "safe" place to leave a car for a few days?---how hard is it to get to from the main roads?) I switched to hammocks about 5 years ago, and I agree, it really does open up alot more possibilities!

The TH is on a side road, so it's not too hard to reach. As far as parking, it's not very big, and is in a fairly remote area. Don't know if i'd feel very comfortable leaving a vehicle there. It's a small camping spot without water, but is a great spot when backpacking.

Oh yeah, click on the map image to enlarge.
And, the picture above was taken after climbing up from Clairmont Gap. You are looking South down Talladega Mountain, toward Porters Gap. The Eastern slope in the foreground is the infamous Rock Garden section.
