Ok so I understand that this place is a well kept secret, and I can barely find any mention of it on the internet. I was wondering if anyone here might be able to tell me where exactly the cave is at. If not even a general quadrant would be much appreciated!

Also, I'm new to the area and was wondering if Bankhead and Sipsey are the same thing or are they seperate? Thanks for the help

Sipsey Wilderness is part of Bankhead National Forest.  As to Devil's Well, it's likely a well kept secret.  There are just some places others don't want to share.  Seems like once a place becomes common knowledge someone goes there and messes it up for the rest of us.  Someone might be able to help you out here, but don't expect it.  If you'd been around a while and was considered trustworthy it likely wouldn't be an issue.  But we don't want a lot of these places getting messed up.

it's described pretty well in a book, that's all I'm saying.  I've not actually ventured there to test accuracy, though.

weathermansam thanks for the hint! that is more than i have gotten with anyone else. I can certainly understand that some things are just better kept a secret. it is quite a shame that people can't just enjoy the natural beauty of caves without destroying everything in it!! would you mind at least telling me if this is a book that is fairly new or is it an old one? i have been reading up on sipsey and it is around 26000 acres i believe and to find a hole no larger than three feet in diameter is going to be like looking for a needle in a hay stack! any additional help would be greatly appreciated

The well is on private property in the Sipsey area. There are hundreds of caves in the forest. More info on Bankhead history here: History

Addendum:  All caves are still off limits to my knowledge as well in Sipsey/Bankhead.

Is the cave off limit due to the cave ban that i keep hearing about? if so what does this cave ban entail?

Sorry DavidR but that wrong. It's not on private land, it's surrounded by government land in the Bankhead National Forest.  It's closed to the public because of the White Nose Bat syndrone as are all other caves in the Bankhead Forest.

"It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it while you can, while it is still there. So go out there and hunt and fish and mess around.  Ramble out yonder, explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air. Sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious and awesome space.  I promise you this one sweet victory, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by calculators. : you will outlive the bastards."
