I spent a week in Cullman using a chain saw to help people after the latest bunch of Tornadoes.  It was bad in the track but too not bad outside the track.  I have not read on this forum about any significant Pinhoti damage.  However, I did see on the Sipsey link that Duggar is closed.  Do any of you know of any Pinhoti closures or portions of the trail that would be impassable?

From the tracks, it looks like most of the pinhoti should have avoided tornado damage, but I think that F4 that passed above Piedmont crossed the trail, if the map is accurate. Look for the tracks map on the right hand side, about mid way down.

See:  http://www.noaanews.noaa...._tornado_information.html

Keep in mind that even if there was no tornado, there still might be extensive storm damage. We've had a rough spring. Sad

Wait... The NFS site says all roads, trails, area open in the Talladega district. Ditto on Oakmulgee. The only closure listed is a horse trail in Shoal Creek due to forestry activity. Might want to call to confirm closure?

My wife and kids hiked Dugger last weekend,  from FS 500 to the top and back. No problems encountered.

Can't tell from these images, but it appears the tornado didn't do too much damage to section 13.  Maybe it crossed the areas already stripped by logging.

I checked all the trail heads from 603A (Rebecca Mtn. S. ) to 500 S.( Shoal Ck. ) and the only closure was from I-20 to FS 518
approximately 1.5 miles re-routed road walk on Al. 281 for the timber harvest as of 5-9-11.
On 5-10 I talked to a couple that had hiked from Jackson Chapel to Burns and they reported no closures.

Happy Trails

Thanks to all for the info.  Glad to see the Pinhoti is operating normally.

Update on Pinhoti closure;
As of 5-24-11 the section has been re-opened between I-20 and FS518.

Sat. June 4th. 2011
Horn Mountain reported by 2 hikers from Bulls Gap to Porters Gap.
Several blow downs and large tree tops to bushwhack around.
Low vegetation was in places grown together on the trail.
The only water was at Scotts Lake.

Hiked Adam's gap to Cheaha Trailhead on Jun 4.  No damage.  Water available at seep at Chinnabee / Pinhoti Connector.  Follow streambed downhill (along Chinnabee) a little ways until you find the seep coming out of the rocks.  This is the last water we found heading north.
