I am looking for a short hike where my son and I can get out and do an over night trip.  He is 9 and I am not sure how well he will do on a long trip, but  a short hike with an overnight stay might be doable.  I was hoping to find something close to central Alabama, I live in Montgomery.  I may eventually take him up to do some of the Pinhoti, but want to let him experience something short first before tackling anything else.  Any suggestions?  It might end up being better to base camp and then dayhike, but want to get him used to packing all his supplies in and back out.

Well, National Forests are pretty much open game as long as the weather permits campfires. There's a series of trails running up on the ridge over Payne Lake that might be a good starter. You might check with the rangers in the Oakmulgee section of the Talladega National Forest to see what they think. I've found them to be very accommodating. I think they'd like more people to pay attention to that area.

I was out at OakMulgee this weekend. Beautiful woods there. I need to look into some hiking there!

Every journey begins with a single step.

Hi! We are having a National Trails Day at Flagg Mt. in Weogufka next Saturday, 6/4.  We are going to have hikes going on.  There are 3 campsites on Flagg if you want to camp or you can go out for the day.  If you are interested in bringing your son and checking it out, we would love to have you there.  Saturday, June 4....9 am to 1 pm.

I would hike from the Cheaha Trailhead on the Pinhoti south to McDill Point.  There's an awesome campsite out on the point.  Hike back in the morning.
