About 8 days ago, I got a report from what I would consider to be a very reputable source that a hiker had fallen and died in the Little Ugly Creek area, and that a second person was seriously injured.  Apparently the recovery/rescue was quite an ordeal.

Since then, I've seen nothing on local news.  Al.com has nothing.  Google doesn't know.  Anybody heard anything?

I haven't seen or heard anything, and I can't find anything on the internet. It would be a likely place for a fall, but I'm thinking maybe it is a rumor, or maybe two people did fall, but nobody died, or some other form of crossed signals. A non-fatal fall probably wouldn't get covered considering the heavy news activity over the past few weeks.

Maybe check what your source's source was, and if you are really interested call NFS?

The hiker was a friend of mine who had been on several hikes with me. She was 60 years old and in great health. Her husband was on the hike with her. The hike was led by an organization that leads hikes in the Bankhead on a regular basis. One person was minorly injured trying to stop her fall. She tried to climb to a spot to have her picture taken. The recovery effort took 8 hours due to the emergency workers not being in very good health.

Hey... Everybody be safe out there, please. This is a horrible reminder both of how dangerous some of the places we sometimes take for granted can be, and also how far help really is if you get hurt.

It definitely sends me a message.  Some of the places I venture to are more remote than Little Ugly.  Sorry to hear about this, Kim.

I'm sad to hear this confirmed.  So sorry for your loss, Kim.

The Sipsey is a beautiful place, but a truly wild and potentially dangerous place.  Let's all be careful out there.
