need help with maps

OK! What's up with the maps? I don't understand them at all! I see post of doing 200, 204 , 207 or whatever and I just don't get it!!I went to the USDA Bankhead National Forest map with the various trails shown. I see those trails listed with the mileage of each. Are these just out and back trails? Are there signs that show where one trail ends andanother begins? I would love to do some hiking in that area, but fear I would get lost if I had to rely on that map!  Can someone please help me make sense of this map? :] Thanks

 The trails are all interconnected. There are wooden signs with the trail number at some intersections. There are also other unofficial trails. The map you linked to is an overview of the entire Wilderness Area-not a detailed topo for navigating.

Here is a website   with detailed trail descriptions and topo maps.
CartoCraft makes a very good waterproof topo map of the area with GPS waypoints too. Available at Alabama Outdoors.

You can do out and back or make overnight loops. If you have a shuttle partner you can walk across from one trailhead to another.
