Logging in the Sipsey Wilderness (Alabama)

I just sent this to the US Forest Service:

"Sirs,

Per the Black Warrior Wildlife Management Area (WMA) map (link provided below), all land south of the WMA Headquarters road (aka 208) is Sipsey Wilderness land.

However, approximately a mile west of the WMA HQ building, there is active logging on the south side the HQ/208 road (just before the 203 trailhead).

I thought the use of all mechanical devices and logging is not allowed in the SW.

I emailed Mark Kolinski of Wild South when I saw this, and he replied in part:

"The wilderness boundary from that bend in the road north past the 203 trail head is actually quite a distance in from the road, due to the shooting range that was there when the Wilderness was designated. The wilderness boundary along the rest of the NW Road is actually 100 ft. from the centerline of the road. The road is NOT the boundary, never has been. The logging is part of a tornado damage salvage sale. All trees on the Wilderness side of the road must be cabled out, since it is a no-equipment zone. Please let folks know about the boundary.

Looking at other maps, it makes sense the wilderness area doesn't include the old quarry/firing range.

Good to know about the 100' off the centerline.
