I remembered this trail from when I was in the scouts in the 70's. I google searched and found this info. Does anyone have any more info on this trail?

Boy Scout Troop 44 and a reformed committee are attempting to reestablish River Mont Cave Historic Trail near Bridgeport.

The trail was established in April 1967 by the late G.C. Barham and Don Abbott of Boy Scout Troop 65. It begins in Bridgeport at the Bridgeport Walking Bridge and travels 15 miles ending at Russell Cave National Monument.

The River Mont Cave Historic Trail committee is a non-profit organization that has been reestablished to repair and maintain the trail. Its board of directors are: Randy Smith, Glen Hill, Grant Barham, Warren Witcher and Mary Jo Blevins Hackworth. The men were all scouts and walked the trail in the 1960s.

The River Mont Cave Historic Trail is named for the mountains, caves, valleys and rivers in the area. It winds across mountains, through beautiful valleys and near the river offering spectacular beauty for all to see.

The trail was established to train youth in responsible citizenship, character development, and self-reliance through participation in a wide range of outdoor activities, educational programs and career oriented programs in partnership with community organizations. It serves in preservation and protection, interpretation of plants and trees by appropriate signage and enhances the partnership between the National Park Service, state and local governments and citizens groups.

The committee needs help with the restoration project. Local scouts, individuals or other group are encouraged to volunteer to help with the task. For more information call 256-495-2672.

Carl,

I made reservations to hike this trail in the mid 90's for my scout troop but our contact had to cancel on us the weekend we were going and I  never made another attempt to go.

Seems like the place we were to start was located on private land or something required someone from the trail association to be present at that time.

I hope they are successful in getting the trail reestablished.

"It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it while you can, while it is still there. So go out there and hunt and fish and mess around.  Ramble out yonder, explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air. Sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious and awesome space.  I promise you this one sweet victory, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by calculators. : you will outlive the bastards." Me too, I think it would be great to get some of these old trails reopened. In the 70;s we went to Tannehill Iron works and hiked a trail there. I can't remember how long it was but it was a long day hike. Parallelled a river or creek best I remember. I have the patch "Tannehill Ironworks Trail" on my red scout jacket. I have to take a pic and post it.

I hope they can get it re-opened too, that's beautiful country.

I  grew up in the B'ham area, but I've only been to Tannehill once, and that was a very long time ago.
I don't remember any trails, but their website mentions some hiking trails. It looks like this is a day use only, historical park.

I had a little bit of info on the trail as I also work for Russell Cave. I do know that they are trying to get it re-opened and Russelll Cave National Monument is on board.  I will see what kind of info that I can dig up.
