Pinhoti Trail dayhike (challenge hike)

This month, we’ll hike the section of trail running from Coleman Lake to Rabbittown Rd. (Hwy. 55), just south of Dugger Mountain. We’ll start at the FS500 trailhead, proceeding north through the open longleaf pine forest managed by the Forest Service for red cockaded woodpeckers, before descending into a gorge filled with mixed hardwoods.

This section, at about 8.5 miles, features several spectacular water crossings and gains a rating of moderate to strenuous. We’ll pass several waterfalls, then hike across the top of the Choccolocco Creek watershed lake dam and the nearby Choccolocco shelter. We’ll end at the Pink E. Burns’ trailhead and cabin (which has been burned down). Hiking boots a necessity. Bring plenty of water and a picnic lunch. Optional dinner afterwards.

Contact Ken at kennethhyche@yahoo.com for more info. we will meet at Bass Pro Shop (at the gravel parking lot for big rigs before the main entrance) in Leeds at 07:30 or Target at exit 188 interstate 20 in Anniston at 08:30.

well, i'd say "big".  The list has 26 people signed up as of now:
http://www.meetup.com/Bir...ureGroup/events/42890952/

I think there were 16 that showed up for the last one (Dugger Mtn).

I've been to a couple of the challenge hikes, so I'm only speaking from that experience.  There will probably be some no-shows.  Also, the wilderness area limits group sizes to 10, so we split up and meet back together at key points on the trail.  This is a point-to-point hike, so we'll leave a few vehicles at the end point first then carpool to the start.

Range of ages?  Well, that is pretty diverse, too, it seems 20s and up, but mostly older than that.  "Middle aged" would probably describe most folks.  Kids under 14 or so are discouraged, as they might hold the group back.  Since the group will break up into groups of 10, no matter if you're fast or slow you can fit in somewhere.  You can read about the general guidelines the the meetup group here:

http://www.meetup.com/Bir...ghamAdventureGroup/about/

Hope that helps and hope to see you there!
