I just noticed that I still have a file with a bunch of GPS coordinates in it that somebody sent me. One of them is a 100ft waterfall at the following location: http://maps.google.com/ma...h&z=15&iwloc=addr

Anybody know anything about it?

Jaybird,

I saw it too. Wink

I'm about 95% percent sure it is. I thought it *might* be on private property, but WildSouth is pretty good at playing it safe, so either it is NFS property, or the landowner allows access.

I don't think I'm up for another bushwhack on steep terrain quite so soon. I really would love to take that trip, but I just don't think my knees and ankles would cooperate. I'm still waiting for my ankle to stop popping after the last bushwhack I was on!

I believe that is Walker Falls.  Haven't seen it personally but plan to try to hit it from the Sipsey on a canoe trip in a couple of weeks.  Supposedly it makes a good loop to check it out along with the falls on Hurricane Creek...all off trail of course.

McDowra,

When you say no waterfall, do you mean you found no flowing waterfall, or no evidence of a waterfall at all?

I know there is a waterfall of that size in the area, it has been confirmed by multiple sources but the coordinates may well be bogus. For some reason lots of people end up putting out NAD 27 coordinates without labelling them as such, and they end up being a little off. My guess is that this is the issue here, unless the falls are extremely seasonal.

Hope you had a good hike, even without the falls. Wink

PS: Did you encounter any waterfalls in that area of the forest?

OK after looking at it my gps shows we went to   34 14.349  87 21.370  so we went to wrong coordinates I believe. There was no sign of waterflow or falls there. I will do a better job next time sorry.

McDowra,

Looking at the map and your coordinates, looks like you stopped at the top of the drainage. So close...

Did it look like it was private property there?

there is some private property that is posted, but it is a large shooting field.  I have to take my group to deer skull next weekend, but after that I can give this one another shot.

McDowra,

I figured there was some private property in the area, based on the aerial photography. Be sure to stay clear of private property, especially that used for shooting! You wouldn't be the first waterfaller to get shot at for one reason or another. Although turning around in driveways seems to rate higher on the shotgun scale than trespassing. Wink

Good luck at Deer Skull. If you go in via Eagle Creek, be sure to budget some extra time, because the long drought combined with the heavy rains in the past few months have, as you may have read in our thread about the bushwhack a few weeks ago, left the areas between Eagle Creek Falls and the junction with Little Ugly Creek somewhat muddier and less fun than in previous years.

Anybody know anything about this waterfall?

There are actually 2 waterfalls there.  The one pictured and then another "2 drop" fall to the right that is at least twice as high as this one.  Couldn't get a real good shot of it due to the light, leaves and the narrow canyon.  Real easy and short hike off the river...definite ly one of the prettier spots I've been to in the Sipsey.

Awesome! What would be the easiest way to get to it?

As I've only been there the one time during a quick break while canoeing the river, I'd have to say that is the easiest.  There's no doubt in my mind you could get there overland but I'd be extremely skeptical if someone said it was easier that way.  Less than a 5 minute walk upstream from the river.

Also, while the other waterfall is much higher, it would very much be more of a seasonal flow than this one.  Would probably need to hit it after a decent rain (as is typical with lots of the falls up here).

My want of a canoe increases daily. Unfortunately, I have to move all my stuff 1000 miles in a few weeks. Since I have about four floating adventures I'd like to do, I should just get off my butt and rent one.
