OTTAWA — Nalgene, the brand that popularized water bottles made from hard, clear and nearly unbreakable polycarbonate, will stop using the plastic because of growing concern over one of its ingredients.

I really believe this BPA is bad stuff. If you have "lexan" or "Polycarbonate" bottle or storage I would recommend trading out. Apparently you can find the highest concentrations of it in saran wrap. The chemical appears to leach out in temperatures only as high as room temperature which is worse that I previously was aware of. That means that if you use this stuff for making coffee with or cooking with in microwaves you are consuming even larger amounts of it.

Guess that means I'm doomed. I have nearly a dozen on the bottles around my house. I also have a few lexan bowls that we cook in quite often. You'd think as long as I've had them and been using them, somebody somewhere would have made the observation of becoming ill.

I'll have to do an inventory to check and look at replacing some. I've heard the chats about it being bad, but every other survey out there seems to contradict the previous findings. Eventually someone has to step up and make the call.

I had basically stopped microwaving w/ plastic last year. Also did Ya'll notice this paragraph:

"A difficult question for retailers will be how to handle products, including soft drinks, that are packaged in aluminum or steel cans.

For the last two decades, the interiors of most cans have been coated with an epoxy resin that is made using the chemical to extend the shelf life of the contents and prevent the metal from affecting the flavors of food and drinks."

I'm still skeptical too due to the conflicting research. And injecting rats w/ the stuff is one thing, but honestly how much is really in your water?

On the other hand, it's Kinda funny/ironic that Brita just started an ad campaign about not buying bottled water and is selling their filter pitchers packaged w/ Nalgenes. Seriously, sometimes ya can't win either way.

If you trust the FDA, then don't worry about it.

Joshua, you beat me to it. I saw that this morning...

It still makes me wonder, but then again, I haven't turned my older nalgenes back in for a refund yet.

I think I would look into what other reputable control boards say. FDA doesn't always nail it.

A conflicting report from another gov't agency. This one says no ban required yet, but more study required.

And the plot continue to thicken...

http://health.usnews.com/...chemical-in-plastics.html

When are we going to get a definitive answer on this one?

All I'm saying is better safe than sorry. I would just assume not toy with the fact that my family has a tendency toward certain cancers and heart disease. Pretty much if the dumbest dumb person alive came up to me and said breathing causes cancer I would die of suffocation.  Grin
