I didn't think this was an issue, but my neighborhood doesn't prohibit it.

Clotheslineshttp://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/the-rumble-in-the-tumble-fight-for-the-right-to-dry[/url]

How does everyone feel about it?  To put it delicately, it smacks of a condescending negative reaction to the perceived economic hardship of their neighbors.  I've found covenants repugnant most of my adult life.  In fact, I only lived in one neighborhood that had them, and when I moved, I have checked before I bought again, to make sure I wasn't getting any.  Some of my neighbors have had some eyesores, but I can tolerate a mess if it isn't toxic, and I don't want anyone measuring how tall my grass is.  Its my yard, and I do hang clothes out as often as I can!  I love the smell, and hearing the birds.  The sandpapery texture, helps exfoliate my skin, too!! I too have discovered the use for these ancient architectural artifacts. Surprisingly they weren't erected for pagan rituals to honor the sun and moon (mine are of E-W orientation), but an actual energy-conserving appliance. DW balks at the idea and thinks my tighty-whiteys (and her granny panties too possibly) are too gross for public eyes. But seeing a chances to save some green on those golden sun beams and warm spring breezes, I too have jumped on the clothesline bandwagon.

Ever noticed how they don't put those Energy Star tags on dryers? (you know the ones that are used to compare the efficiency of appliances)

I like the idea of clotheslines, for obvious reasons, and I detest covenants for equally obvious reasons. I don't think using a clothesline denotes poverty or enconomic hardship at all, because I've seen them outside of McMansions all the way down to trailers, but I also don't think that is the only main reason people put prohibitions on them in covenants. I think it is mostly a sterility issue, but also a squimish victorian atitude. Modern subdivisions are designed to be sterile, internally identical in all aspects, so much so that they even keep the tree count down. A clothesline detracts from that sterility nearly as much as a ham radio tower, kid's toys in the yard (which you rarely see), or heaven forbid, flowering plants.

Where I don't want to see clotheslines is in apartments or condos, where it makes the place look like an 1880's NYC tenement house if everybody has them. No so much because it looks poor, but because it is about as asthetically pleasing as pink stucco 1000 miles from a beach. Wink

Thanks for fixing the link, flemdawg.

Some of my best memories were helping Mom hang out the wash, or playing in the flapping clothes while she did the hanging.  I would hold ends up so they wouldn't hit the ground and such, but it was a way to have her still for a while, and get most of her attention, and the smell of sun dried clothes is one of my favourite smells, along with the aroma of rich soil, fall leaves, the air after a rain.

Sometimes its not just covenant/neighborhood associations that get out of hand.

Crap! Now these H'ville yard Nazis are after me. They sent me a "letter" saying I have till Sept. to fix a couple of chipping paint spots and a loose shutter (nail stripped out at corner).  Our city hall needs an enema.

If they want it fixed so bad tell them to do it themselves.   Lips Sealed
