The Marvel Slab is a slab of concrete that's been laid across the river as a cross point for wagons.....it's probably older than any of us put together. There are something like 8 of them at various points down the Cahaba. I have found 4.

Also, Booth's Ford is the Old Slab. Last summer I took the family there many times to wade the river. It was less than a foot deep then, but had deep pools upstream and down stream which were fishable. People there mentioned a shoal down stream, which I will check out sometime.
I don't have a canoe yet, but have considered putting in at the old slab and floating to the new slab, and also doing a short float around that bend near the new slab. The mouth of shades creek is on that bend. I saw on the web that Samford's biology dept floats that sometimes, wonder where they put in.
The dirt road to the new slab from the south is long, bumpy, and full of holes.
We did the Bulldog Bend to Cahaba river float on the little cahaba, 12 years ago. The camp ground people, who you report now are out of business, rented and shuttled us. I remember having a map that told of the floats upstream that you mention, but there are at least two small water falls so beware. Also on the map was a six mile creek float, which may be kayak territory and more heavily dependent on rain.
