Hi Matthew.

I missed the parade of kayaks/canoes at the "official opening" of this trail, but living in Prattville, I've taken my kayak out on the Alabama River a few times (usually launch at Cooter's Pond Park).  It's fun and there are many things to see that you completely miss from a car or a motorboat.  You DO HAVE to be careful of powerboats though.  Most of them will not come too close to you at speed, but some just do not pay enough attention (they just don't think about canoes/kayaks).  I tend to stay in the sloughs or near the banks if I venture into the main body of the river.  I also normally don't take to the river on weekends/holidays - too many powerboats.

A canoe or kayak also has to consider the wind if getting out on the open water.  Fighting a headwind or getting into choppy water is no fun.
