Hi folks. I'm planning a float for the 27th for my family and the IL's. What's a good float for a single day in the Bankhead/Sipsey area. Nothing too adventurous, there'll be small kids on this trip. And is the Warrior Mountain Trading Co the only outfitter there?

You had better hope for lots of rain between now and then or at least in the couple of days leading up to that weekend.  As of right now, you would be doing more hiking and dragging than paddling.

I went on May 28, '06 for the first time and the water level was approximately 21 cfs/3.07 ft (judging by the grayson marker) and it was a long, hot day of getting out of the boat every 50-200 yards to not only dislodge it but then in most cases drag it 5-30 yards to where the water was deep enough again.  Right now the river is lower than that at 14 cfs/2.95 ft.  You could certainly do it but NEVER again for me.

In comparison, we went again back in April of this year with the flow at 145 cfs/ 4.10 ft and had a BLAST Smiley

You can check the level and run all kinds of historical reports here:

Great river to paddle but very seasonal and subject to run off on the upper stretch.  Although I've never done it, a better idea might be to put IN at Hwy 33 and head downstream towards Smith Lake where the water starts backing up and getting deeper.  I hear it's equally as pretty on that stretch but more of an effort as the flow is slower.  Not sure exactly where you would take out (Houston Rec Area perhaps?)

Ok if I look for alternatives to Sipsey, what kind of mileage should I look for? Any other rivers to reccomend in Northern AL?

Terrapin Creek is a great float but really only a day trip.  Also a day trip but sounds like a good family trip would be 5 Mile Creek just NE of Birmingham.  A quick Google for both should provide you with the respective outfitters (only 1 for each that I'm aware of).
