Well for the last week, we've been eating fresh picked squash and green beans from the backyard. And have had a few bell peppers as well. Tomatoes, Corn, potatoes, purple hull peas, onions and melons are coming along nicely. Strawberries, broccolli and spinach were big busts. With the strawberries never emerging at all, spinach killed by the heat already and bugs eating the brocolli plants (I'm resisting any urges to spray chemicals at this point and will just call it a loss).

We also bought a large roadside-type garbage can and drilled holes in it to turn it into a compost bin. It works great!

Garden is growing well. Ours was small this year because it was our first.  We've had some lettuce, tomatoes, hot peppers lots of herbs. Cucumbers and onions are still too small. We have tons of Japanese eggplant. Strawberries are not so happy, slugs are attacking. We are going to get a small copper sheet to put under the strawberry jar to deter slugs. Our eggplant and tomatoes are in copper tubs (thank you mother in law) and they are happy happy with few bugs.

Also mix of dish soap and water spray works might me a replacement for pesticides. It rinses off the food and you use it on the dishes anyway.

We did the same thing for a compost bin and I'm really happy with the results.

We also have a potted violet that we don't like, but wilts when it's time to water.  It's a great water indicator.

I made home made pesto tonight. We have a good crop of basil and it came out good. We will put it to the real test tomorrow.
