How big a fam of 5 are we talking? Meaning, my fam of 5 is DW, I and 3 lil' ones who eat 3-3.25 adult portions total.

Where are you going, car camping, backpacking, 1-night, 5-nights, thru hiking?

What are you cooking? Boiling water for Liptons, simmering a stew, slow cooking a boston butt?

I pretty much have one of everything. Canister, white gas, propane car-camping stove, alcohol pop-can.

OKay ,to clarify ..
We are planning a 3 night hike with a 7-6&4 yr old with DH and Myself. We already car camp so I am all set for that Smiley  But I will need to cook enough food at least at night at least reconstitute or maybe make some dried beans at some point...
Hmm wonder if I could dook the beans and then dehydrate them...hmm

Yep, you can dehydrate canned or cooked beans.

A penny stove would work if you just wanna boil some water for noodles, beans, and oatmeal. Its alot lighter than the Peak1 I lugged around Mammoth Cave NP 2 weeks ago (and probably safer too). My second choice would be a mini canister like a Pocket Rocket.

OHHH! thankyou* for that site!!! am was wondering about rice but hadn't taken the time to google it!
I think I may get a canister.... I will go and look ..can you get the actual canisters smaller? so I could cut the weight when DH and I can go alone(yk, that one time in five years?)
Course I could make a couple of Penny stoves:P I might do that! I bet my Engineer boss would even let me do it here at work lol
Thanks!!!

OK ,hmmmm
I need to look on ebay I guess .. We just have a Dick's and they s..umm well yk. I found one stove for hiking ..that was pretty much it... They don't even carry decent Hammocks!,at least not at the Brick and morter..
Oh yes Bearleader! That site has inspired me! I am going to premix all the burrito ingredients and well I could make a whooole nother post just listing the stuff I want to precook!!!heehee.  Gotta get a couple of beer cans from the recycling place for a penny stove.. I understand the Heineken(sp:P)  cans are a bit longer lasting and easier to deal with..
OK gotta get to bed to get up and work a half day so we can go caaaaammmmppppin g! wooohoooo!
LATER!

I recommend any of the MSR isobutane stoves. For warm weather and more than 2 people they are great. Dicks here in the ham has them. I use the *windpro model when we have more than two in our party. They are fine in temps down to about freezing then they get a bit flimzy on the boil times.
