Okay, this article has a ring of SCI-FI to it, but at the same time, there IS a finite supply of rare earth metals.

Well we live in an ignorant in materialistic society. People would rather have flat screen TVs rather than a better world do live in.

For most people a flat screen TV is a better world.

They'll probably outlaw them soon anyway.

Well... The plasmas are already technically obsolete now that they make LCDs that are as big or nearly as big, but use substantially less power. I'd prefer to see them fall totally out of favor. LCD production isn't clean, but at least it doesn't leak slowly over time, destroying the environment while slowly losing picture. Then again, I've broken a mercury containing LCD, and there is a heck of a lot of mercury in some of those backlight bulbs.

My folks got a high 40/low 50 inch Plasma, and it draws 760w! It gets so hot it has FANS in it. They were baffled as to why their power bill nearly doubled after they got it, until I read the power sticker.
