Wild Wednesday Hikes in July:
July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
All ages
The next Wild Wednesday in the Bankhead National Forest will be July 9.
Destination: Caney Creek Falls.
Distance: 2 miles, roundtrip. Moderately easy. The only things that keep this from being an "easy" hike is the end of the trail that descends steeply for a few yards into the canyon, and the return hike, which is mostly uphill. Even with these features, this hike is easily do-able for people of average physical ability and well worth the minor challenges.
Description: An easy mile-long walk from the road (Winston Co. Rd. 2) down a clear, wide trail into Caney Creek canyon. After a brief period of steep descent, there is one of the most beautiful waterfalls anywhere. It is a gentle wade from the white sand beach under the sandstone bluff into the swimming hole at the base of the waterfall.
After signing up, hikers will meet at the Warrior Mountains Trading Company in Wren, Alabama (11312 AL Hwy. 33, Moulton, AL 35650). Please park on the south side of the building then come into the store. We will gather at the tables in the center of the store at 9:30.
Come prepared to get wet! Dress for hiking. Wear shoes/boots with good tread for slippery rocks. Changing in and out of bathing suits will not be convenient, so wear clothes that can get wet, or bathing suits under clothes. Poison ivy and ticks are abundant. Please use tick spray only after arriving at the trailhead and wear long pants and closed-toe shoes if allergic to poison ivy.
