I was thinking a group campsite at a state park. Desoto? I don't want to alienate non backpackers.

That sounds fun. I wouldn't be able to go though as I will be in Oklahoma.

Don't count on me being there, although we'll see what happens.
Keep in mind that they are working on the campsites at DeSoto, I'm not sure what impact that might have, but I know the last time I was up in that part of the park it was a mess of bulldozers. The campsites at Brushy Lake might also be a good option. Close to Sipsey, and if the water levels are right, possible canoeing.

Sipsey or Desoto work for me. Both are pretty close.

The place for gathering doesn't matter much to me as I'll have to drive north anyway. I bet the old pros could bring extra gear to share with those who aren't sure about packing for an overnight hike. Not so sure about how to have extra water craft for those like me who have only done one paddle trip?

I like the idea of Cheaha too. Never been there.
Conversely, Desoto does (or did) have large group tent camping sites, would make planning alot easier.

I am kind of partial to the Desoto group campground. I will call them today to see if it will be available by then. We might want to make sure the renovations have not adversely affected tent camping up that way though. I hate the idea of pitching a tent on gravel.

Well I just got off the phone with a rep from Desoto State Park and they say that the campground will not be open until at least early October so I think that we can strike them from the list.

I'm going to be the simple one, but what's wrong w/ Oak Mtn state park, either the camping sites or one of the close backcountry sites? I think there's a backcountry site within 3 mi of a trailhead there at OMSP on the yellow.
Just a suggestion.
Otherwise, sipsey sounds pretty good really.

It's in Bankhead near sipsey. I figured it would be a good place to set up the tents and what not but we can do some dayhiking round sipsey as well or canoe and kayak people can set up some activities as well. does anyone know of any mountain biking near bankhead? I will cross post this in the other event forums as well.

I think any of the multi-use trails in Bankhead are open for MTB.

I didn't think any of the trails were open for mtn biking in Sipsey. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I thought at least.
Have any closer coords or description of the lake? Haven't seen it before.

Not Sipsey, but the rest of the trails in Bankhead NF. http://www.lightinside.org/bike/bankhead.htm

Sounds like a great idea - Sipsey is great by me.
I'll have to "pencil in" the dates right now. October 4 is the beginning of our Fall outage at the mill -- that weekend is tenuous for me.

Yep... we have 2 outages per year, Spring and Fall (worst possible times if you want to enjoy the outdoors). Being in Process Control our work load increases around these outage times...

I feel your pain. I work in a plant making compressors for AC units. Every March through June/July I am forced to work overtime just about every weekend when I would rather be outdoors. well at least until the summer heat. This year we are launching a new compressor in the fall so I will most likely be working yep you guessed it more overtime.

By the way we will be announcing what this years Karma Prize will be at this event. Only one person gets the Karma Prize per year and then everybody drops back down to zero for the new year so this will be a big one.

you need to re-state on the Subject line where it is don't you gracious host? It took me a few minutes to find the location again.
I read Brushy Lake , which is east of the Sipsey Wilderness and east off of AL33, on a county or FS road in Bankhead N.F., right?
the calender doesn't state the place either without going back doing the same search.

Looks like a superb weekend for the Alatrails Birthday Weekend! Matt and I are really looking forward to it. Other than the fantastic Flem-fam is there anyone else we can expect to see either Friday or Saturday? We'd love to know what faces to be looking for

Siiiiigh, well we thought about you all hiking and camping:( WE sat out around the pit fire and roasted hotdogs for a bit just to send happy camping vibes your way:) But as it goes "what can go wrong will go wrong" Tues,AM I went to work with all 3 DDs in the bed and sleeping soundly ,by 4pm DD3 was running a 104 deg temp and through wed 102 medicated so strep throat hindered our try to make it:( I was afraid someone else would get it or spread it soooo:P I hope we can plan a spring campout Gulf state park? maybe? Wonder what the weather is there now......
