My bride and i don't hike during the summer because of the heat, instead we use the time to come up with some goals we want to achieve this fall. One of our goals is to see if anything is left of Alabama's first oil field, foundations and such. Did you know alabama was the second state in the union to have oil fields?
 What are your goals?

Well more ticks for me then. :-D

Take a couple of camping trips (no idea when/where yet), and I have one BP trip w/ some work buds on the AT in/thru GSMNP.
Go see the Big Tree at Sipsey (prob during the Alatrails Birthday Ruck).

In no particular order... My first thoughts about this...
  • Hike section of the Pinhoti
  • Backpack portion of Sipsey
  • Bartram Canoe Trail / 5 Rivers Delta Center
  • Cycle St. Mark's Rail Trail
  • Continue Bike Commute to Work

I'd love to join one or a few on my next section hike of the Pinhoti. The only AL part I lack is the 38 miles north from Cleburne Co 55 - Burns Trailhead, but then there is 150 miles of Georgia to see before getting to BMacKaye and on to Great Smokies within 10 years.  Maybe a September weekend ?

1. Backpack in the Sipsey (never been there)

2. Oak Mountain Hike and Bike or Bike and Hike

Not necessarily in that order. It will be difficult to accomplish either since I am exiled down here in Lee County.

I need to lose about 4 more pounds. I also need to work on my cardiovascular routine, up my walking/jogging/biking distances and do some weight workouts. Y'all know they having an Ironman event in New Orleans next year? Dude, that would rock!

Return to the trails.

Avoid the leaf peepers, and yet somehow commit more to photography efforts.

Leaf peepers? In Alabama all you have to do is go out early to avoid them since there aren't all that many, except Sipsey, which requires going during the week and in the morning. Wink

Now try dodging them in GSMNP, or on the Cherohala, or in New England... THAT is a challenge.

I'd suggest trying to hit places you don't normally do during the leaf season. Avoid Oak Mtn, avoid LRC,  avoid Chinnabee, avoid Sipsey on weekends, and try out the less popular trailheads in Talladega, or the backside of Sipsey. Long ride, but less crowded most of the time.

1) Find a job. That student thing was getting tiresome after so many years anyway. Wink
2) Get up to Watkins Glen SP in the Finger Lakes of NY.
3) Add at least one more state to my list. I missed NH by 10 miles in June, but I have no real reason to go to NH.
4) Actually USE all my new camera gear. The 40D has been out about five times so far.
5) Get some decent foliage pictures for once.
6) Drink plenty of cider. Sweet or hard, I don't care, I just want some liquid apple in my mouth. Wink

Aren't the White Mtns enough of a reason?  Huh?

Not in the fall. Too many New Yorkers. Not as bad as VT, but pretty darn bad. Wink

No, seriously... I'm pretty much limited to day trips right now, and there are no get-in get-out photo ops on my list in NH. I only managed to get to Vermont this year because Eshqua Bog litterally took me less than 2 hours to photograph, since the plants were isolated in a very small area, and were only a short walk from the road.  I didn't have time to do anything else before I had to turnaround and head back.

We all lack common sense when we need it, and have it in abundence when observing someone else in need. Wink
