I'm looking for good deals on camping gear.   I would prefer websites because i don't live in AL anymore, but any info would be appreciated.  I already have enough stuff to camp, but I need to replace two sleeping bags.  Which reminds me, did anyone purchase any of the Rokk brand stuff?  It came with a lifetime warranty, but i'm having a hard time finding a place to submit my warranty claims.

thanks

Coop, I personally haven't had experience with Rokk brand products but I went to their web site, Rokkgear.com, and after some digging around I found their Mailing adress and customer service number, hope they are of some help.  Cust. service number is 1-877-765-rokk(7655).  Adress: Rokk
                                                      1224 Fern Ridge Parkway
                                                      St. Louis Mo. 63141
As for best places to buy gear, I'm with Matthew, Try to buy from a local dealer if possible. I've had way fewer problems than with online transactions. There are some very reputable online dealers too, REI, Campmoor and others. If you have some idea what equipment and name brand you want just type in the brand name and it will direct you to their website as well as other dealers handling their gear. Almost all of the sites have CLEARANCE items listed for sale, they usually carry the same warranty as the other stuff, just last years design or overstocks. You can also try links found on Backer.com. Hope this helps. Happy trails, Rob

campmor.com  and REI are the best websites I know of.  Between the two I outfitted three people for very reasonable.

My favorite is thrift stores and yard sales. Yes it takes time to find all the right stuff, but it's cheap ($35 for a 10 person cabin tent, $10 for a 30deg synthetic filled sleeping bag, $2 for a good air mattress, $5 for a quality Mirro 4-person cookset, $10 for a peak1 stove, $20 for a nearly new Camp Trails int frame pack), it's broken in, and you're not contributing pollution to manufacture and transport new stuff.

For camping/hiking stuff, or nearly anything else you can think of, try a Salvation Army or Goodwill store or any similar organization's outlet for donated items if there are any in your area. You never know what you will find in such places. I have found clothing (how about a fleece jacket for $1 ), cookware, sleeping bags, fishing tackle, all kinds of things from time to time. Pay them a visit every week or two, their inventory is constantly changing. And it's always very low priced.

For general backpacking gear I’d add Northern Mountain Supply (KillerDeals.com) to those listed above. And nbwebexpress.com for Dunham hiking boots.

This is great guys. Make sure and add links to these places in the links section of the site. That will prove a valuable resource for others in the future.

Thanks

I would suggest REI.com and for local guys check out AlabamaOutdoors. com.

Both of those are my primary places. I'd much rather go into the store, get a hands on feel, then if the price isn't right, go online to shop. I really like the loyalty points from ALOutdoors too. That's one way I tend to get my Christmas Presents!

Others:
Antigravitygear. com
Kelty.com
SteepandCheap.co m
Campmor.com

Check those out and see what kind of prices you can get and what you can outfit yourself with.

Found a new one I really like,

Spadout.com

It's like a normal outdoor store website, but uses a mysimon-type price comparison that includes coupon codes for all the internet retailers. Very cool.

I know I've spent entirely too much time today playing with the product comparison tool. Need a internal frame pack w/ 3000 cu in cap, a torso length of 16 in, and a waist of 24 in and cost less than $100? Just move the sliders and see the results.  8)

I know I am digging up an old post but I have to add that anyone who has never been to Mountain Crossings at Neels gap on the AT in North Ga. needs to make the trip.  Winton, Alpine and the rest of these guys truly are experts.  They have all Thru'ed the AT and know what they are talking about.  My only word of caution is the same advice I give to people who are going to a casino for the first time...Know your budget and leave the credit cards in your wallet!!!  This place is like a candy store!!!  While you are there, take 5 steps out the front door and get on the AT for a hike.
