Our boy scout troop has a trip planned for December near cheaha close to the odem/high falls trails. We have heard that much of the forest near there has been burned this summer from forest fires. Can anyone confirm the condition of the trails near cheaha/talladega national forest?
Thanks.

From what I've heard, the fire got close to, but not to, the trail. The hill side above the upper portion of High Falls was apparently scorched, but the trail portion of the forest is apparently undamaged.

I was in Cheaha/Talladega on Friday, but I was on the Talladega Scenic Drive and in Cheaha State Park, and unfortunately the road from the scenic drive to Blue Ridge Rd. is still apparently closed, so I did not personally see the area on Friday. The good news is that they turned the one-lane unpaved road between the scenic drive and Blue Ridge into a paved, two-lane road. This means that the scenic drive finally can be properly signed on the south-western terminus, directing you out of the middle of nowhere, rather than making you ponder the options of either turning left into the unknown, or following FR-600 to where it gets impassible for most cars. Hopefully they will re-sign and re-map the route of the scenic drive so that it doesn't appear to continue down FR-600. And hopefully this means they've finally abandoned any idea of paving FR-600 to continue the scenic drive to its original final destination.

jo7hs2 ,
How's the water up there near Cheaha? We have a troop hike there in Dec. and would like to know before we go that way we can carry extra if need be.Or do another trail that has water.
Thanks,

ke4uzi,

I didn't get a look at any of the streams while I was there. All I can tell you is that it did rain, HARD, last night here in Shelby County, and they just got a little rain over there today, too.

Report says 1.59" in Talladega in last 24.

Conditions might change substantially by Dec, but I'm guessing you'll still need to bring water. It's dry out there.

To all it may concern.

I know I ask. It is an after thought, but it might not be a good idea to give specific  dates of Scout trips in forums. There could be people looking that We don't want to know.

Absolutely, I have done my level best to protect people from spam and what not on here but unfortunately there is not a lot I can do about prying eyes. I guess I should post a sticky topic about safety concerning such things.

Another option would be the Skyway loop with the Chinnabee Silent trail.Water is usually availale on this walk.Even when we have rain, water is hard to come by when you walk up on the mountain, unless you want to carry it.
