SEWER OVERFLOW HURRICANE CREEK
reposting from:   http://www.myspace.com/hurricanecreekkeeper

A sewer spill on Cottondale Creek has been releasing raw sewage into a retention pond along Cottondale Creek for days now. In the event of significant rain, there will be a spill of toxic water into Hurricane Creek. Persons having contact with the water are warned that serious health risks are associated with these type spills.

As of now, no toxic material has reached the creek but that could change with rain

Here is the complaint just filed with the city of Tuscaloosa and ADEM as well as EPA region 4.

I'm quite sure many of us have visited Desoto State Park, How many have been to Indian Falls in this park? Ever notice the sewage processing station ( or what ever it is ) directly at the top of the falls? I often wonder what exactly, were they thinking! What is it's purpose? Who is responsible for monitoring it's condition? Is the contents eventually allowed to enter the river? Have you ever noticed the strong stench that sometimes permeates the air around the falls as I did on my last visit to the falls?  Just another Hmmmmmmmmm from Rob

Rob,

Contact DeSoto State Park about it. They are usually VERY receptive to e-mail questions.

My assumption is that they are properly operating and maintaining the facility, even if it is a somewhat foolish location. I've gotten a faceful of doodie water at least once there, and I didn't get sick...

All right... there goes one of my glowing childhood memories.... My mom let us drink out of a stream at De Soto when I was a kid. In her defense it was nearly 20 years ago and it seemed really pristine. Maybe that's why my immune system is the human equivalent of Fort Knox. Thanks (?) mom...

I drank out of a stream for years as a kid. Never got sick...until I did.

I don't drink streamwater anymore, even though it tastes soooo good unfiltered and untreated.

Do you remember which stream?
