The final word seems to be that is is indeed a raccoon. Thank (insert favorite deity here)! That would have been awkward and bizarre if it were something else of an X-files nature. This is what happens when you release 84,000 sci-fi / superhero/ fantasy movies in one summer. People go nuts.
