Has anybody watched a fall sunrise at LRC? I'm curious as to whether any of the overlooks have a decent view of the sunrise this time of year. I'll scout it out if need be, but if anybody knows, that'd be a help.

I think if it were me, I would just use a compass and get to the western side of the canyon and find a good secluded spot that overlooks a low section of the eastern side of the canyon. There is so much distance to cover that it would be difficult to say that any one spot would be better than the other. You should be able to get the angle of sunrise from this site http://www.locationworks.com/sunrise/ssr.html  .   Good luck.

Matthew,

That was my backup plan, of course. Actually, since all of the overlooks are on the western rim of the canyon, the trick really is just finding one that doesn't happen to face to far north or south. I *think* that more than half of the overlooks either face southeast, or have an eastern view. I don't expect to struggle to find a good angle, but since the area doesn't officially open until sunrise, and since it is a very remote area to be wandering around in the dark, I'm stuck with the overlooks.

I'd usually scout the area in advance, but since I've been there before plenty of times during the day, I was really just wondering if any of the overlooks happened to be a decent sunrise spot.

Thanks for the angle calculation link. I prefer the Naval Observatory for the actual times, but the link you provided adds the one thing I wish the navy would add, where the sun is!
