Would it excite you to hear that Birmingham could secure a recreational, public park space in excess of 1,100 acres—an area larger than New York's Central Park? Could you, your friends and family find a use for more than 18 miles of new biking and hiking trails, open fields and picnic areas, all within 15 minutes of downtown? Would you like to have a say in the selection and planning of the park's features and amenities? If so, help us make this all a reality by lending your support and becoming a Friend of Red Mountain Park.
Tour Dates Have Been Set

The Red Mountain Park Commission is allowing the Friends group to conduct a series of tours of the Park grounds. Though the Park is not open to the public, this is a great chance to walk around on the property and get a feel for the location and scale of the land.

I cannot make it on a Sunday, but I would be interested in hearing anyone's impressions of the new park-to-be.  Oak Mtn State Park is a good place to hike, bike, and enjoy GOD's creation, imho, and I'm eager to see what Redmountain Park will add.  It would be great to have an opportunity to help in the conceptual design and implementation of this park.

If any of you get to go, please let us know what you think.

I've done this tour twice now (there's been 3 to date).  I think I posted some pictures from the original.  The tour covers just a small portion of this sizeable land area.  It has nice terrain, good foliage and birds (another hiker started an inventory of trees, plants, and birds), and great history to the area.

It's not as rugged as some portions of Oak Mtn, and doesn't have the beauty of Moss Rock, but it'll still be a gem.  Much closer to Ruffner in style.

Astepatatime,

Considering how productive Ruffner Mountain is for birding, I'd expect this park to be a decent birding location as well, because it is in the path of the migration. Do you have a link to that inventory?

Josh,

I'm not sure its online yet.  I'll reach out to the Friends of Red Mountain and see if they have a current/updated copy.  If not, I know the guy who took the inventory.
