A good reminder to be prepared with adequate equipment and knowledge.  Just because you "think" you know the area doesn't mean you can't get lost.  A compass and map are important items to pack.

2 hunters lost in Barbour County woods found, dehydrated

Associated Press - August 11, 2008 2:34 PM ET

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - A hunt for hogs by two Dothan-area men turned into a search for the hunters after they got lost in dense woods in Barbour County.

Air units and search dogs were called in and both men were eventually found. Both were described as being severely dehydrated, but did not need to be hospitalized.

Authorities said Christopher Edmondson and Edward Brock, both 24, started hog hunting in the thick forest about 5:30 a.m. Saturday in northern Barbour County and got lost after a few hours.

They used cell phones to call home, but the batteries ran out. Barbour County Chief Deputy Eddie Ingram said searchers found Edmondson about 5 p.m. Edmondson said Brock was too tired to keep moving, and searchers found him about an hour later.

No map, no compass, dead cell phones, no drinking water, they split up but lived to tell about it? Lucky!

No one goes into the woods with thoughts of getting lost or becoming injured, but it is prudent to consider "what-if".  Packing a few essential items, letting others know of our planned route, and being mentally and physically prepared is wise.  Going out into the great outdoors otherwise can be foolish and the results can be deadly.
