Any plans on new stuff? I think Lesley and I are gonna take the plunge on hammocking. I think we are gonna get her a Bear Mountain Bridge hammock. Me I am hoping for a nice underquilt.

Thinking about:
a down sleeping bag
a Ti cooking mug/pot
I also really like the GSI Gourmet Camping cookset (the 4.1 lb is giving me pause though)

However I don't really need anything.

Well we already got us some new gear that we haven't had a chance to try out yet.

Me a ULA circuit pack
Trish got her a new Golite Pinnacle womans pack

These will replace our Golite Gusts.

Oh and we got a new simmering stove alcohol stove from packafeather.

As soon as the Sipsey gets more rain we will be out there trying our new gear.

Trying to figure out if I want a Never Winter, M.H. Phantom 30 or a M.H. Ultralamina 30.  Decisions decisions....

Well I was going to,  Fix or Replace  then Woody messed it all up.  I had every one telling me I needed a new tent and I was just about to send the thread link to my wife to show her I needed a new tent.  Then Woody had to come on and say I could use it like it was.  Thanks for nothing, Woody.

Grin  Ok, so I am picking on Woody.  After he brought me back to my senses I realized he was correct.  As a good little Scout I should have continued to use the tent.  So I will continue to use the tent and teach my Scout son that we shouldn't fill up the land fill with good tents that can still be used.  Also I can teach him that he is fortunate to have a tent because I know Boy Scouts that don't have a tent yet.

So no, I probably won't be getting any new gear this season.   :'(

Sorry about that BearLeader67 but it sounds like you have good motivations to keep using it. Don't let me mess you up on that though, Admin has my permission to remove my post so you can still send the thread to the wife.  Grin You could still teach him the lesson of conservation by buying a used tent though Wink I have four backpacks now so I can't say much about buying something for "need" really but I do buy a lot of used gear. I appreciate the added benefit of not creating more waste but I usually buy used because it is just cheaper. I have been accused of being uh..um thrifty? I probably won't be buying anything else this year though. Well I won't go that far, there is another old external frame backpack at the local Salvation Army that I might pick up. It is only $10 but I am not sure of the brand. For the age of it, it can only be one of a few like a Kelty or REI. I just can't resist old packs for some reason.

Well... I've been blessed greatly, so I can't say I have any needs.  To be honest there are few wants in the area of gear too.  I think I'm getting a Pocket Rocket for my birthday coming up...(hint to DW & DD).

Guess what I'd really like to have is TIME to get out more and enjoy Creation!

If I were to list any "dream gear", then how about a touring kayak?!...

So what made you decide to go with the ULA instead of the pinacle for yourself? I was just comparing the specs and the golite seems a bit lighter. I ask mainly because I was considoring getting a pinacle for myself at some point. My MIL has one and I would love to shed a pound or two when I am in the mountains. For Sipsey I will most likely still carry my z55 for the additional comfort and coolness factor (as in the vented back).

Matthew

Actually for myself It was between the ULA circuit and the Six Moon Designs Starlite.

I first came across ULA while looking for a new pack for a 09 AT SOBO. I was at first going to carry my Golite Gust but decided I wanted something with a suspension system and padded hip belt. So to answer your question, it was for a padded hip belt and suspension system. Not to mention that its just a nice pack and very comfortable..oh and it has pockets on the hip belt, that's nice when you want to snap a picture or grab a quick snack without taking off your pack.

Its mentally hard to put on the extra 11 oz's that the ULA gives me over my Gust, But I'm still under 20lbs so I'm happy. I have shed weight in other areas to help compensate as well.

As for Trish's pinnacle, she loves it. And highly recommends it ...especially to women that want a woman specific pack.

You will LOVE the ULA pack.  I got one earlier this year right before an A.T. trip.  I have never had a pack that was so comfortable.  I am not a big fan of Golite other than their clothes.  Most long trail hikers that I have talked to say that their gear just does not last when put under hard use.  I found evidence of this while on that A.T. trip.  I ran across 2 separate people who were trying to fix their Golite tent poles which had snapped.  I tend to remember stuff like that when it comes time to purchase new gear.  Matthew, you all will love hammocking.  I also went with a hammock this year, I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THE GROUND if I can help it!!!  I have a Speer with his overstuffed Peapod...Very warm.  I used it down to 27 degrees with a strong wind early this past spring and was comfy.  No new gear for me this year as I spent more than my share before spring and almost completely re outfitted my gear closet.  I will be doing some DIY stuff before my October trip to S.W. Va for 6 days on the A.T.  I am planning on a lightweight quilt to augment the Peapod in colder weather.  Man, I love this gear talk!!!

Forget the hammock; the thing I'm excited about is my new hiking buddy!  Grin

I hate to have to remind you, but there are benefits to tenting w/ DW that's not compatable with hammocking.  Wink

The tent is staying too. Mainly we want the hammocks for situations where there are few good tent sites.

Well the need for a new computer has prompted me to most likely just stick with the gear I got for a while. I may try to shed a few ounces in gear this year though so that pack may be a good one. Apparently I have to wait until December 1 though because the company is on the trail.  Hopefully I will still have the cash flow to get a new sleeping bag though. I burned up in my 15 degree bag at the beginning of last fall.

I need, or want, rather, a lighter, more compact sleeping bag. I bought a 20 degree bag from wally world just before my section hike. It worked fine, kept me warm, no prob's, just bulky and heavy. I also need a new pair of trekking poles and a good waterproof jacket.

I can't say enough about the Marmot Sawtooth if your looking for a cool weather bag.  You can usually find them for a decent price on e-bay (15 degree bag about 2.5 pounds)  I found mine for about $130 new.

As for poles.  I just bought a pair of black diamods to replace my swiss gears.  Those poles did the job great.  I'd be more than happy to donate them.

Thanks for the offer, dude. However, I told the wife I was gonna get some new ones from a local retailer, that way, I've got a good excuse to go there and get OTHER stuff, if ya know what I'm saying. But really, that's very kind of you. Maybe you could donate them to a local Cub Scout group or Girl Scout group?
