Anyone here with thoughts/comments about Rickwood Caverns State Park??? Interested in the cave tour, the hiking trails, and the campgrounds (tent camping). Anyone ever been?
Thanks for your input.

We went to Rickwood Caverns SP last year as part of our "getting to know our new state tour". It was our first real experience on a caving tour, have since been on several, including Ruby Falls.
The cave tour is interesting, to a non spelunker. I didn't really know much about the geologic formations, but still found it interesting. You have to take a guided tour, led by a SP employee (in our case, a teenager working a summer job, bored with repeating the same tour speel over and over). But it was still enjoyable and a great introduction to caves.
We didn't camp, so I can't speak to the facilities. Took a brief hike on one of the trails (found a geocache while at it). There was a pool that was quite popular (this was in July or August of last year).
I don't think Rickwood rates too high on our list of state parks, but the cave is worth an afteroon or as part of a quick overnight campout.
Hope that helps.

Fresh Air Family was there last weekend. And I've really enjoyed Cathedral Caverns.

FD1,
I was wondering which one was best... did you like Rickwood Caverns or Cathedral Caverns best???

I live about 5 miles from Rickwood Caverns. It is clean and nice but it is not a major attraction or anything. The cave tour is neat and they have a 1.5 mile hiking trail. They only have about 20 camp sites but they are decent from what I remember. For a hot afternoon though, take the cave tour, hike the trail and take a dip in the pool. Not too bad.

I hiked the trail during probly the hottest part of the summer (early Aug). Since we started out kinda early it wasn't too bad. Very beautiful area. When me and my husband went, there were a lot of people at the pool and you could hear the kids screaming on the trail until you were at the farthest end. Probly not a problem during late fall, winter and spring, but it did kind of give a perspective on the distance. Lots of grasshoppers and cicadas but didn't really see any other bugs except for like one hornet. I have noticed Yellow Jackets concentrate around watery areas and since the trail is on the side of a mountain there wasn't any anywhere. I wish we would have toured the cave tho! Camping areas are very beautiful. I condiser the trail really easy but more than 1/2 of it is over rocks and boulders. There was one tree down over the trail but it's very easy to get over. Definitly worth a visit!! If you like it there you should also try out Tannehill State Park!
