I guess this is the right place to post this......forgiv e me if it's not.

Howdy, just found y'all's site. Nice place.

My name is Barry, I live just outside Hattiesburg, MS.

I completed my first AT section hike this past April, was freakin' awesome!

I hit the Tuxachanie Trail and the Black Creek Trail here in south Mississippi when I can, that is, what's left of them since Katrina came through.

Anyway, we don't have a hiking/outdoor forum over here, and found this place when looking for info on the Pinhoti, glad I found y'all and hope to be able to make good contributions to your site.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. We camp at Oak Mtn. sometimes and I've hiked there as well, nice place. I'm trying to talk the older dude I sectioned hiked the AT with to let's do the Pinhoti, Alabama section. Looks like it could be done in 2 weeks, maybe?

Man, I was hoping it was Brad. :-)

I grew up in MS myself (south of Meridian). Mom's a mustard buzzard grad.

WELCOME!!

Also originally from MS (Coffeeville, Senatobia, Gulfport, Grenada and Starkville) but live in B'ham now...welcome to the board.

I hiked a good deal of the Black Creek Trail years ago before Katrina and it's difficult to find any current information on the web about what condition it's in....your thoughts?

Most of it is 'passable' now except for the part that passed through the Black Creek Wilderness Area. The forest service has not cleared it yet because 'gas powered' devices aren't allowed in there, hence, no chainsaws.

I hiked from Big Creek Landing all the way to just past Brooklyn a few weeks ago. They've got a contractor clearing the trail with a dozer, it's that bad, it's just taking some time.

Yikes...not really a "trail" after a dozer passes through!

Thanks for the info...

Welcome To the alatrails forums Barry! I'm sure you will be able to contribute alot to the boards. Maybe you can give us a run down on the gear you used for the AT section hike. Those of us who envy your accomplishment will find it useful.

Here ya, Rob. What I've posted here is what I used on the section hike. I didn't post my food, but I took a few of those dehydrated meals from Moutain House/Home, whatever their name is, and a LOT of cranberry granola bars from Sam's Club and some of those powdered drink mixes you mix with your bottled water. I used the ones with a LOT of B vitamins to help boost energy, go figure......

Welcome from the Northern side of the state... Smiley

Apparently they haven't told you yet, but it's customary for the new guy to have to buy a piece of gear for everybody that replies to the "welcome" thread. Guess you should've known Smiley

I'm in the market for some driwick longsleeve shirts, size L.

Eh, all in good fun. Welcome and glad you're here. It's excellent to always get someone new!

bpitt, I am planning on doing the Black Creek Trail over the Thanksgiving weekend. Is the trail trough the Black Creek Wilderness completely unpassable?

It was, but I haven't been down that far to see in a while. Last year it was still somewhat impassable, i.e, you could hike it, but you were gonna be climbinb over a lot of trees. I hope to check it out in the next couple of weeks, I'll let ya know.

Sorry to drag an old thread back up. But how did the hike turn out? I'm thinking of hitting Black Creek for some hiking/canoeing in March.
