How long does it take to hike the Alabama section of the Pinhoti? I was good for about 10 miles/day on some of the Georgia AT section, just for a gauge, if it helps.

Has anyone taking kids on it? My 8 y.o. wants to start hiking with me. We do some short hikes in the GSMNP, usually between 2-4 miles, nothing longer. She really digs the outdoors and I get a fair amount of vacation time at my job, so I figured an Alabama section hike in the next year or so might be feasible, though, I don't know if my daughter would make the whole thing, I know she should be good for 1 day anyway.

The AL part is 140 of actual or 170 miles if you do the 1st  3 sections of roadwalk.

http://www.pinhotitrailalliance.org/sitemap.html has a decent online trail guide left column. Let me know when you go, I have an 8yo hiker daughter too.

So I'm guessing 2 to 2.5 weeks. Does that seem feasible?

I took my 8 year old grand son on a hike last year.  I would not advise trying to get your grand daughter to hike the entire trail.  Make the hiking fun, not a chore.  Take her on short hikes around Coleman and Pine Glen  camp areas on the Pinhoti or the Chinnabee Silent Trail which is a spur off the Pinhoti..

There is no way I can give you specifics about how long it will take you.  If you are happy with 10 mile days then 2 to 2 1/2 weeks is about right if you do not have to take a zero for resupply.  I do not think there is any part of the Pinhoti that would tax you if you wanted to do 12 to 15 mile days.  The other part of the equation is the daylight available.  The winter days of 11 hour days  versus the summer days of 13+ hour days will naturally impact your distance each day.

Go to the Pinhoti Trail Alliance page previously mentioned and to the http://www.alabamatrail.org/hikingAL/ site which has trail descriptions and mountain profiles.  These two sites give you plenty of information to compare to your experience to make a good hiking plan.

I thru'd the PNRT over a year ago and it took me 12 1/2 days from Bull Gap into Cave Spring, GA.  One resupply in Heflin, AL and the rest was history.  Like others have said, I would not attempt the entire trail with a youngster.
