Night riding is great fun. Technical trail difficulty goes up at least one level. You pretty much have no depth perception. Things may seem to fly by you when you are barely moving yet you may be going very fast but don't realize it because you can't see what you are rushing past. ALL of the little green lights you see on the ground are spider eyes. At Sokol park the smaller owls will fly just above your helmet light beam. The big owl will scare the crap out of you. Due to the twistiness of the trails you may see/ spook/ dodge the same deer several times. I recommend trying a few rides with a borrowed light. If you like it be prepared to spend some money because you get what you pay for. Bright light or long battery life or low price. You can only choose two unless you find a real good deal ($250 - $300) on EBAY for an HID light with a four hour plus burn time NIMH or Lithium-ion battery. Expect to pay more, a lot more. With a helmet mounted light it points where you look but there are few shadows so things may look washed out. A bar mounted light shows ground features better but on tight turns there may not be much illumination of where you are about to go. I use both when one isn't loaned out. Plus it's always a good idea to have some sort of backup.

No questions yet but I may join you guys for a night ride in a couple of weeks. I would like to give it a shot before investing in all the lights.
