High FallsHigh FallsMost every boy scout in Alabama broke in his hiking boots on this trail!  This is a great walk offering waterfalls and views, starting out by climbing metal stairs beside High Falls before passing the Nubbin Creek trail junction and ending at the junction of the Pinhoti and Chinnabee Silent Trail.  Officially, this trail continues on the same path as the Pinhoti all the way to the Cheaha Trailhead for a distance of about 10 miles.

Driving Directions
Traihead Directions:

Cheaha Trailhead -- located just down the hill from the entrance to Cheaha State Park.  This area is accessed by taking exit 185 off I-20 east and following the signs to Cheaha State Park.

High Falls Trailhead -- take Hwy 49 south off of the Cheaha Scenic Byway (AL 281) as you approach Cheaha State Park and follow the signs for the High Falls Trailhead.  It is approximately 9 miles from AL 281.

From the trailhead, proceed up the narrow path that looks like a old dirt road.  Make sure to stay to the right, as the left road takes you to a set of heavily used campsites.  Cross the creek (High Falls Branch) and proceed up the rocky pathway enjoying the lower cascade on your right.  This lower cascade is the 3rd of 3 waterfalls you will experience in the next few hundred feet.  In another few hundred feet, you will begin to hear the 2nd waterfall -- obviously bigger than the 3rd one.  As it comes into view, you'll see that it is indeed a good 15-20 feet falls/cascade much steeper than the first.  Here, the hiker must climb the first set of stairs on the left side of the falls.  Be careful here, as the stairs are narrow and steep!  Upon arriving at the top, you'll be confronted with the 1st and biggest of the falls at High Falls.  Again, on the left of the falls, you'll see a set of metal steps leading upward.  This is the Odum Trail.  At the top, the trail follows the narrowing creek and finally switches back and begins climbing away from the creek.

The trail is somewhat rocky here but rather gradual in it's climb after getting out of the High Falls Branch Canyon.  After about mile 1, you'll come to a wonderful pine tree that I've nicknamed the "Hobbit Tree."  There are several established campsites along this stretch.  In another 1.5 miles, there will be a good overlook to the left.  This is the first chance that you will have had to view the surrounding terrain.  You'll be looking west out over the southern expanse of the Cheaha Wilderness.  After this overlook, the trail becomes steep again and rocky.  In about another half mile, you'll intersect the Nubbin Creek Trail junction on the right.  The Odum continues straight ahead.  It is about 1 mile to the intersection with the Chinnabee and Pinhoti trails, most of it downhill -- and most of it rather uneventful.

Once the trail reaches the Pinhoti junction, it officially combines treadways with the Pinhoti and continues to the Cheaha Trailhead, which is another 6 miles away.   This makes the Odum Trail a total of 10.5 miles.

The Odum Scout Profile track only includes 3.64 miles and does not include the last mile from the Nubbin Creek junction to the Pinhoti/Chinnabee junctions at Caney Head, or the 6 mile section from Caney Head to the Cheaha Trailhead.
